Today I heard someone talking homosexuals so negatively, because they don't "like to be hit on by guys." I think, but it's okay to get hit on by random girls? Why, does being hit on by another guy make you feel like a woman? Or feel threatened by unwanted sexual advances by someone who has the physical ability to use force against you? I just don't understand why straight cismales make such a huge deal about being around gay males, like not every guy is going to hit on you... sorry for the rant

There’s actually this saying that people who are afraid/disgusted by homosexuals are just afraid to be treated the way that they treat women. It definitely has a large grain of truth.

[TW slurs] A Friendly Reminder: Don’t Call Out -ists With -isms.

prolongedeyecontact:

Yes, the GOP political candidates are racist, sexist, classist, ableist, heterosexist, and cissexist bigots. Absolutely. But let’s not call them out by saying they’re “idiots”, “batshit crazy”, “delusional”, “lame”, “stupid”, “retarded”, etc.

Let’s not call out racist women by calling them “dumb bitches.”

Let’s not call out cissexist feminists by calling them “morons.”

Let’s not call out heterosexist poc by calling them “welfare queens.”

Let’s not call out sexist men by calling them “fags.”

Let’s not call out ableist people by calling them “selfish sluts.”

Let’s not call out classist people by calling them “crazy rich people.”

It’s called intersectionality. And trying to combat -ists with -isms will never be okay. Few people are privileged on every single axis, oppressions can’t be compared, and your oppression doesn’t make you incapable of being oppressive on another axis. Someone said something -ist? By all means take them down. But no one needs to engage in -isms to do it. You’re hurting other people when you do that. And their oppression, perpetuated by you, is no less painful than the fucked up thing you’re angry about. Full stop.

Lastly, garnering solidarity under the guise of -isms isn’t cool either.

You “Stand With Planned Parenthood”? How about you support them instead?

"The way for the creative community (and indeed, the entire world) to address anti-gay bullying is not through weepy portraits of its victims, but through SHEER RAGE. Fuck “It Gets Better.” Show us a campaign against gay teen bullying called “THIS SHIT HAS TO STOP RIGHT NOW” and we’ll sign on in nano-seconds. Because the people who need to address anti-gay bullying definitely aren’t the victims – and not the bullies, either. It’s society that needs to change its attitudes toward gays, from the top down. And when the majority of people are righteously angered by any attempts to dehumanize gays or treat them as inferior – and more importantly, moved to act on that anger, rather than sitting at their computers and shaking their heads over it – then anti-gay bullying will practically evaporate."

Is there a particular song that you think about when you think about homophobia in music?

Not really, because there is just so much music that is heterosexist. Especially with mainstream music. I mean, the only songs that even really talk about the possibility of liking the same sex are really problematic songs like “I kissed a girl” and “Born this way” and a lot of songs in rap, metal/rock and pop use slurs like “fag” or “gay” to mean bad or demonize or make fun of “feminine” men or “masculine” women. I’ll just stick to my queercore underground music.

Virginia Senate approves bill to ban gay adoption

gaywrites:

Last week the state senate in Virginia voted to approve a bill that would allow private adoption and foster care agencies to deny placement of children based on “religious or moral beliefs,” essentially opening the door to banning gay parents from adopting.

The state house approved an identical bill the week before and the governor has already said he’ll sign the bill, so it’s very likely to become law. Every Republican in the Senate plus two Democrats voted to pass the bill.

Lawmakers attempted to include amendments to the bill, such as banning foster parents from giving their potentially LGBT children “reparative therapy,” but the amendments were all shot down.

“This bill authorizes every one of the 80 private adoption agencies licensed in Virginia to refuse to offer their services to any GLBT person based on a written moral policy, which they can make up tomorrow,” said State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-Alexandria and Fairfax), who is gay.

“The bill says they can do that no matter how qualified the prospective mom and dad is to become a parent,” said Ebbin in an impassioned floor speech urging his colleagues to vote against the bill.

Gay parents are no different from straight parents. This is absurd, unnecessary and unjust.

Full-Page Ad Calls for Cardinal’s Resignation

ADVOCATE.COM GEORGE TRIB AD | 390

The LGBT rights group Truth Wins Out is taking out a full-page ad in Sunday’s Chicago Tribune calling on the city’s Catholic archbishop, Cardinal Francis George, to resign because of his comments comparing a gay pride parade to a Ku Klux Klan march.

The ad is headlined, “Hey, Cardinal Francis George, Gay is not like the KKK,” and it calls his remarks “offensive” and “unconscionable.” George made the comparison in an interview last week with a Chicago TV station regarding a controversy over the schedule for next year’s parade, which would have gone by a Catholic church during Sunday services. The parade’s start time was then moved from 10 a.m. to noon so as not to inconvenience worshippers, and George made conciliatory comments but then reiterated the comparison in an official statement on the archdiocesan website this week.

“This is not a legitimate fight over religious liberty as George wrongly implies, but a vivid example of religious bigotry fueled by a mean-spirited analogy that linked innocent, law-abiding families with the KKK,” said Truth Wins Out executive director Wayne Besen in a press release. “We will stand up against such lies and speak out when LGBT people are unfairly maligned.”

Truth Wins Out has also gathered more than 4,000 signatures on its Change.org petition calling for George’s resignation.

Orthodox Rabbis Warn of “Dangerous Homosexualist” Named Mittens

by Evan Hurst

Mittens the Dangerous Homosexualist

Oh, Mittens! You’ve gone and rustled up the ire of the wackiest fringe rabbis in the land! Why, they have given you a new title, that of “dangerous homosexualist!” Oh, dear:

The statement today comes from the Rabbinical Alliance of America, which describes itself as an organization of 850 Orthodox Jewish rabbis in the U.S. and Canada, who serve some 500,000 religious Jews.

[…]

The statement attributed to Rabbi Yehuda Levin said that Hannukah marks the defeat of the Syrian Greek efforts “to impose their pagan culture on the Jewish people.” That included, he said, the increased emphasis on homosexual behavior.

“While our organization does not make any endorsements of political candidates, in view of the disastrous national decline in morality, we are compelled to condemn Mitt Romney’s support and promotion of the immoral homosexual lifestyle and agenda,” his statement said. “While we sympathize with those challenged by homosexual urges, or a desire for minors or adultery, they all remain prohibited activities that debase the practitioners and demoralize society. Gov. Romney over a long political career has earned the title: ‘Dangerous Homosexualist’ – one who constantly advances the militant anti-religious, anti-society, immoral homosexual agenda to the detriment of family people.”

Oh, Yehuda, for him to “constantly” be advancing anything, he’d have to be capable of having a single opinion on an issue for more than five minutes.

I am happy, though, to have a new thing to call him: Mittens The Dangerous Homosexualist. It’s like a whole new Mormon superhero!

Barnes & Noble Pulls Offensive 'Sissy' Calendar From Online Store

projectqueer:

SissyCal
Two days ago, Andy broke the story of Christian cartoonist “Joe King’s” bizarre “I’m Not Gay, I’m Just a Sissy” calendar, which was for sale at Amazon and BarnesandNoble.com. The calendar, which promised “12 Months of Sexual Confusion, Not That There’s Anything Wrong With That,” proposed to make buyers laugh by making fun of straight-identified men with “sissy” characteristics. Or so it seems. The whole exercise was a bit of a muddle, frankly — the February illustration was entitled “We’ve All Got AIDS,” and an illustration purporting to make fun of sissy Oscar night parties was used to illustrate November.

Now, after complaints from a great number of Towleroad readers and countless others, Barnes & Noble has ceased selling the thing. Amazon.com is still at it.
