The major contribution of undernutrition to mortality is through its impact on disease mechanisms.
The figure above (data from 2004) shows both the causes of child mortality and the percent of those deaths (shown in the inner circle) that can be attributed to undernutrition.It shows that only 2 percent of child deaths are directly (or solely) attributable to nutritional deficiencies. However, poor nutrition is also responsible (inner circle) for 73 percent of child diarrhea deaths, 45 percent  of neonatal infections, 44 percent  pneumonia deaths, and 47 percent of measles deaths.
In all, 35 percent of child deaths are attributable to undernutrition. These deaths from common childhood illnesses would not have occurred if the infected children were adequately nourished.
Moreover, the majority of child deaths from common illnesses - more than 80 percent - are due to mild or moderate, rather than severe, undernutrition.
