Clinical Major Depression

Clinical Depression is the most common form of depression. Although everyone gets sad sometimes, especially when life keeps throwing horrible experiences at you, but clinical depression is characterized by feelings of sadness, loss, frustration, and anger that interfere with your life for longer than a couple of weeks. The exact cause of many mental illnesses including depression isn’t known. It’s thought to have something to do with the levels of certain chemicals in your brain. Usually mental illness will run in the family so it may have some genetic factor, but it’s also usually triggered by certain events in your life. People with depression tend to have a distorted negative view of themselves, life, and people in general. Symptoms include irritability, isolation from others, difficulty concentrating, change in appetite, fatigue, feelings of hopelessness, feelings of guilt and worthlessness, loss of interest in things you enjoy, thoughts of death and suicide, trouble sleeping or sleeping more often. Depression can also be more turned towards anger rather than sadness. Everyone has different symptoms, so you may not have all of these symptoms and you may have different symptoms. The main thing is that these symptoms are debilitating enough to prevent function in many different parts of your life. People with depression aren’t necessarily sad or have symptoms all of the time, they may go through different episodes. It’s a serious illness, and isn’t to be taken lightly. Depression can come with physical pain. It’s common for depression to come with other chronic illnesses that may be causing the pain, but it could just be the depression. Diagnoses happens with a therapist. You’ll meet with a therapist or social worker and go through your medical history, past diagnoses, and symptoms. Based on criteria for certain illnesses after a session or so they’ll tell you their diagnoses. That diagnoses may change as you see other therapists, age, or get to know your therapist better. Many people may diagnosed with many different types of depression or other mental illnesses. Treatment is usually a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, meeting with a therapist and discussing coping methods and what’s going on in your life, and medication. The most common medical treatment is antidepressants but other medications may be used. Because we’re not quite sure how depression works, antidepressants may not work for you or you may have to try many different kinds and doses of medication until you find what works for you. Not everyone is on medication, and some find a way of managing their symptoms in other ways. Some people also go through electroconvulsive therapy to stimulate different parts of the brain.

Depression can affect all aspects of your life, especially relationships and sex. Depression itself can cause a low sex drive due to insecurities and hormonal issues, and a lot of antidepressants and other medications can lower sex drive as well. If your medication has changed your sex drive talk to your doctor about changing your medication! You can find something that works for you. I also have a post on increasing your libido which may help. Depression can also cause you to withdraw which can put stress on your relationships. It’s important to let your partner know what you’re feeling and what you need from them. If you need space let them know. If you need them to listen to you rant let them know. If you need them to sweep you up and take you out to do something to take your mind off of things let them know. Also, for people dating someone with depression, don’t assume you know what they need. Ask what they need. Don’t get irritated at them and definitely don’t tell them to just get over it. Depression is serious, you wouldn’t tell someone with cancer to just get over it. It’s also important though to address your feelings if you’re dating someone with depression. Couple’s therapy can help. Realize that their actions have nothing to do with you, it’s their illness. Depression can make it difficult to maintain an erection or reach orgasm. Communication is the biggest tool. Talk to your partner about what you’re going through and tell them what feels good and what doesn’t. Even if you don’t feel up to sex, make an effort to remain affectionate. Cuddle! Hold hands! Watch a favorite movie or go for a walk together. Do something that makes you feel good.
