STIs I haven’t heard of that most sites don’t cover

Granuloma Inguinale (Donovanosis)

This is a bacterial disease that is spread mostly through vaginal and anal intercourse though it can be spread through oral sex. It is rare in the U.S. (about 100 cases per year) but can be found more commonly in the tropics and subtropics. It’s more common in those with penises, about twice as common. In it’s early stages it looks a lot like chancroid, with sores around the genitals. However, if left untreated it can destroy genital tissue, cause tissue damage near the legs, and cause the genitals to loose color. This can cause permanent scarring. It’s tested with a culture and treated with antibiotics. Using condoms and other barrier methods can reduce your chances of getting this.

Lymphogranuloma venereum

This is a chronic infection caused by bacteria and is spread through sexual contact. This is rare in the U.S. (only a couple hundred cases per year) but more common in Central and South America. Again, it is more common in those with penises. Being HIV positive is a huge risk factor. The symptoms can begin anywhere from a few days to a month after infection. They include blood or pus from the rectum, drainage through the lymph nodes in the groin, painful bowel movements, sores on the genitals, swelling in the genitals, and abdominal pain. A doctor will do a physical exam which include blood work and possible biopsies. It is treated with antibiotics and can be protected against using barrier methods

Mycoplasma genitalium

This is a sexually transmitted bacteria. It is usually asymptomatic but can cause nongonoccocal Urethritis (any infection of the penile urethra that isn’t caused by gonorrhea) and is closely associated with bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease and Endometriosis. It can mimic the symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhea. It is treated with antibiotics and can be protected against using barrier methods.

Epstein-Barr Virus

This is the cause of mononucleosis or as it was known in my high school “the kissing disease”. This is a virus that is part of the herpes virus family and it is spread through intimate contact with saliva. Most people become infected with this virus at some point in their lives. When a child becomes infected with EBV it usually is asymptomatic. When it is encountered in adolescence or adult years it has a 35-50% chance of becoming mono. The virus stays in your system through your life but it’s usually only through a really bad immune system that it’ll reactivate again. Symptoms of mono can occur within 4-6 weeks and include fever, sore throat and swollen glands. Diagnoses occurs with a physical exam to take stalk of your symptoms and then a blood test. There’s not much of a treatment (rest and over the counter meds), although if there is prolonged fever, pain, or difficulty breathing you should see a doctor.
