I’ve gotten a couple more questions about my views on incest. Here’s my answer and I’m putting it in the FAQ now.

Anon1: What is your take on incest? I’m talking about consensual sexual contact between willing adults, not children. Do you think it should be legal? What about the ruling in Lawrence v. Texas (2003) that says the Constitution prevents states from criminalizing private sexual conduct between consenting adults? On one hand, I think it should be allowed because they’re consenting adults, but at the same time, I’m unsure because of the relationship between incest and birth defects. Then again, sex between non-related individuals also produces birth defects and those who may be at higher risk for passing them on aren’t prevented from having sex.

Anon2: regarding the incest answer you answered about a day ago. why do you believe it’s alright? even if they are consenting, to me i think it can severely break trust and damage a family relationship.

FYSE: I think incest is okay if it’s between two consenting adults. A few instances I’ve heard of incest were when two adult family members met for the first time as adults, which would admittedly be the best example as they had no relationship prior. However, if two people of an approximate same age grow up together and develop feelings for each other I don’t see problems with that as well. It is a grey area when it’s an older family member with a younger family member because there is a chance of manipulation or grooming the younger member into a relationship. If however, the younger person approached the older person who avoided a relationship until they were approximating the age of consent or some other way where manipulation wasn’t used I’d be okay with that. I have no experience with incest, all I know is that denying two willing people a relationship can be very damaging to them. As far as birth defects, it usually takes generations of incest for birth defects to become evident and if they’re aware of the possibility it’s their choice.
